It opened on January 1, 1883, near Pendleton. The school could not be sustained after grievances with the local agent, and the sisters moved off the reservation to St. Joseph’s Academy, east of Pendleton, though it is not known whether this school included Native children or whether it was also a boarding school. It also fell on hard times, and Archbishop William Gross invited the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia to assume charge of it beginning in 1888. See the entry for Pendleton, St. Andrew’s School for more information.
